About This Venue
Darren Lee Cole has assumed control of the 199 seat SOHO PLAYHOUSE located at 15 Van Dam Street in New York City. Mr. Cole was the producer of the highly acclaimed and successful KILLER JOE, produced at the SOHO PLAYHOUSE in 1999. Partnering with Mr. Cole is Faith Mulvihill, owner of SHOWTIX, INC., a theatrical group sales and marketing company based in Chicago, who plans to develop the newly renovated downstairs cabaret the "Huron Club". Steeped in the history of Old New York, 15 Van Dam Street housed the Huron Club at the turn of the century under "Battery" Dan Finn. A popular night club for the Tammany Hall machine, the Huron Club was later frequented by the infamous Mayor of New York Jimmy "Beau James" Walker, known as "The Night Mayor" due to his predilection for jazz clubs and chorus girls. In the 1960's the theatre operated as the Village South, and was home to Playwrights Unit Workshop under the direction of Edward Albee. It was on this historic stage that Mr. Albee produced many first works of Terrence McNally, John Guare, Lanford Wilson, Sam Shephard, AR Gurney and LeRoi Jones. Mr. Cole and Ms. Mulvihill have renovated the theatre and cabaret with an ambiance that is respectful of its rich, albeit nefarious past.
