About This Venue
The Castillo Theatre produces cutting-edge political theatre that challenges as it entertains. Under the artistic direction of Fred Newman, Castillo has staged over 100 productions by many of the world's leading political playwrights, with a focus on the theatrical works of Newman and German avant-gardist Heiner Müller. Independent of government funding, Castillo produces developmental culture that builds and strengthens communities.
Castillo is a program of the non-profit All Stars Project, Inc., a non-traditional theatrical production house which promotes human development through performance. Founded in 1981, the All Stars creates outside-of-school, educational and performing arts activities for tens of thousands of poor and minority young people. In addition to community and experimental theatre, it also develops leadership training and pursues volunteer initiatives that build and strengthen communities. The All Stars actively promotes supplementary education and the performance-learning model in academic and civic arenas.
