WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
It's half past one in the fabulously cluttered Cavendish duplex in the East Fifties, and anyone who's anyone is still asleep. So begins The Royal Family, the classic comedy of theatrical manners, written by two of the theatre's greatest writers, George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber, whose other storied collaborations include Dinner at Eight and Stage Door. This devilishly funny play follows the Cavendishes, the famous family of stage stars, as they go about the drama of the day: choosing scripts, dashing off to a performance, and stealing kisses with handsome beaus. But what's this business about the younger Miss Cavendish wanting to quit the stage for domestic bliss? Never, darling!
This delicious comedy will be directed by Tony Award winner Doug Hughes (Doubt). The cast includes Tony winner John Glover as 'Herbert Dean,' Tony Award winner and Oscar nominee Rosemary Harris as 'Fanny Cavendish,' Tony Award nominee and Drama Desk Award winner Jan Maxwell as 'Julie Cavendish, and Tony Award nominee and Drama Desk Award nominee Reg Rogers as 'Tony Cavendish.'

RE:Theater lovers should not miss this one!
This is one show that theater lovers should not miss. The play sets around a family of actors and have many hidden references that only a true theater going would understand. Although a slow start, once the setting and plot were place, it moved quickly and was very entertaining. The show was full of great actors and you never know what to expect. It was different from your average play, but different in a good way.

The first thing seen when the maroon curtain rises grandly on the Manhattan Theatre Club's sparkling revival of the George S. Kaufman-Edna Ferber comedy warhorse The Royal Family, now at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, is John Lee Beatty's re-creation of an East-Fifties Manhattan mansion, perhaps the finest interior the architecturally savvy designer has ever created.
It's so magnificent, in fact, that were Doug Hughes' production less accomplished than it is, audiences would leave the auditorium humming Beatty's sumptuous set instead of singing the praises of a 1927 play cynics might label old-fashioned -- but others will characterize as the kind they don't write any more. More's the pity[...]
