WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Matthew Broderick stars in the Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of Christopher Hampton's comedy The Philanthropist, directed by David Grindley.
Written as a response to Molière's The Misanthrope, Hampton's biting bourgeois comedy examines the empty, insular lives of college intellectuals. At the center of the story is Philip (Broderick), a professor who seems almost absurdly removed from the political turmoil surrounding him, including the assassination of the Prime Minister and his cabinet.

Terrible!!!
The worst experience that I have ever had on Broadway. Waist of time and money + disappointment. It looks like the director and producer tried to attract the audience to the good -for -nothing play without any ideas or even the comprehensive plot by using one quite famous name. But after this who will risk to call Mr. Broderick a good actor.

I've admired him in everything since, including his underrated turn as Felix Unger in the Odd Couple revival. (Treasuring his Leo Bloom in The Producers goes without saying.) That's why I expected he'd be ideal as the title character in the Roundabout Theatre's revival of Christopher Hampton's 1970 comedy The Philanthropist, now being presented at the American Airlines Theatre. But I'm mystified at the problems he's having as he portrays reticent philologist Philip -- problems that loom rather large wh[...]
