Following sold-out seasons in London's West
End, Simon Callow makes his Broadway acting debut in The Mystery of Charles Dickens, directed by Patrick Garland. In Peter Ackroyd's new play, Callow portrays the popular Victorian author along with forty-nine of the most famous characters from Dickens' beloved
novels. Taking it's form from the personal appearance tours that made Charles Dickens a virtual pop star in the United States in the mid-19th Century, the show is a funny and compelling look at the brilliant and contradictory life of one of the greatest writers in the English language.

Americans spending Christmas in England are often surprised that the seasonal celebration is not what they expect. Rarely, for instance, is goose on the
bill of fare; rather, turkey prevails. The most Victorian aspect of the holiday in recent years has been Simon Callow's television appearances as Charles Dickens. This mercurial character actor (Four Weddings and a Funeral, A Room With a View, etc.) gets himself up as the Victorian novelist and reads to a group of extras in period dress, indulging himself in long passages from the author's novels and short stories and playing all of the bigger-than-life characters, just as Dickens did when he toured.
