WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Taking place on April 3, 1968, The Mountaintop is a gripping reimagining of events the night before the assassination of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After delivering one of his most memorable speeches, an exhausted Dr. King (Samuel L Jackson) retires to his room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis while a storm rages outside. When a mysterious stranger (Angela Bassett) arrives with some surprising news, King is forced to confront his destiny and his legacy to his people.

Prime tickets to The Mountaintop will be reserved for each and every performance, even in cases when the show is otherwise sold-out, for the low price of $34.50. Twenty Same-Day Reserve tickets will be available each day when the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre box office opens at 10:00 a.m. (Noon on Sundays) for that day's performance(s). They can be purchased with cash or a credit card on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a limit of two Same-Day Reserve tickets per person.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

But by the conclusion of the 95-minute piece -- featuring award-worthy performances by Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett under Kenny Leon's admittedly inspired direction -- we realize what we've witnessed is basically inspired hokum. Not that, as the saying goes, there's anything wrong with that.

This Play has a lot of surprises. It left me wanting for more every time a spitfire, stage-pleaser Camae - Angela Bassett, reveals a deism. Katori Halls fresh twist to the night before Dr. Luther King Jr.s - Samuel L. Jackson, assassination is clever and entertaining. The award-worthy Set & Projection Design is David Gallo is never-seen before. I wanted to give this production a 5-star rating but Jacksons mediocre acting is a liability to this winning production. A letdown for director Kenny Leon. 3.5 stars
