WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The Little Mermaid is based on the Academy Award-winning film and the classic fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. In a magical kingdom beneath the sea, a beautiful young mermaid named Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. But first, she'll have to defy her father, the king of the sea, escape the clutches of an evil sea witch, and convince a prince that she's the girl with the perfect voice.
With a score composed by eight-time Academy Award-winner Alan Menken and his late partner Howard Ashman, The Little Mermaid will feature the classic songs "Part of Your World," "Kiss the Girl" and the Academy Award-winning Best Original Song, "Under the Sea," as well as nine new songs by Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater. The book for the new musical is by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright Doug Wright.

last night i sat through the TLM with my family including my teenage daughters and niece, and we were all thoroughly disappointed. although the sets and staging were clever, the choreography was ridiculously juvenile. the actors portraying ursalla, and sebastian were most noteworthy, but the voices of the rest of the ensemble were thin and lackluster- not worthy of a broadway venue. i will think twice before spending the cost of a broadway ticket to see another disney performance.

Amazing
I grew up with the movie, so I absolutely had to see the play and it was the most amazing thing I have ever seen on a stage! The cast was great and the scenery and costumes were breathtaking. Ive seen a lot of plays and this was definitely my favorite. I want to see it again!

Rummaging through everything in their 70-years-plus catalog to see what can be turned into a money-making musical, the Disney team has finally arrived at The Little Mermaid. Since the show was studiously designed for little girls, anything said by a male commentator who has long since reached his majority may not be worth a day-old scallop to them or their parents; but here's this grownup's opinion anyway. The only things keeping this adaptation of the original 1988 animated film from utter mediocrity are three enthralling new numbers by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater: a cute ditty called "She's in Love," a traditional Disney nonsense song dubbed "Positoovity," and "If Only," a ballad for fou[...]
