WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Scott Ellis directs The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, a new musical based on the beloved American novel by Mark Twain. Two-time Grammy Award winner Don Schlitz collaborates with playwright Ken Ludwig on the show, which is set in St. Petersburg, Missouri during the 1840's. The musical stars Joshua Park as Tom, Jim Poulos as Huck, and Kristin Bell as Becky.

When the most engaging young actor on the stage of a new musical called The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is our hero's mordantly funny kid brother, Sid, you know the show's in trouble. The first act of this attempt at family theater at the Minskoff makes dishwater look colorful. The music and lyrics by Don Schlitz (of country western fame) seem derivative in the extreme, and the two male leads, Tom Sawyer (Joshua Park) and Huck Finn (Jim Poulos), look like refugees from Knott's Berry Farm.
The best entertainment during that dreary first act might well come from the comments made by little kids in the audience who innocently respond to dialogue intended for actors on the stage; the goings-o[...]
