WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Grammy Award-winner Alicia Keys with Reuben Cannon & Nelle Nugent produce the Broadway premiere of Stick Fly, the critically-acclaimed American play by Lydia R. Diamond and directed by Kenny Leon.

The play follows the LeVays, an affluent African American family who come together to spend a summer weekend at their Martha's Vineyard home. The adult sons, aspiring novelist Kent and golden boy plastic surgeon Flip, have each brought their respective ladies (one Black and one White) to meet the parents. Food, drink and Trivial Pursuit tangle with class, race and identity politics in this contemporary comedy of manners.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

A vibrant cast brings to life Lydia R. Diamond's new comedy Stick Fly, at Broadway's Cort Theatre. But while there are plenty of laughs to be had, the piece is also a nuanced look at race and class dynamics.

The play is set in the Martha's Vineyard home of the LeVays, a wealthy African-American family. Joe LeVay (Ruben Santiago-Hudson) is spending some time there with his two adult sons, Harold a.k.a. Flip (Mekhi Phifer) and Kent a.k.a. Spoon (Dulé Hill), who have each brought along their respective girlfriends.

Taylor (Tracie Thoms) is Spoon's fiancée, although it's clear from early on that she has a history with Flip, as well. Taylor is the daughter of a famous African-Ame[...]

So good i didn't want it to end
I took three of my girlfriends on Sunday and today is Tuesday and we are still talking about it and how much we enjoyed it. I hope it gets extended so i can take my daughter to see it for her birthday in March! Yes i would see it again.

Found it engrossing
While certainly not a perfect play, I enjoyed it. Went with 21 year old son, and he did as well. Both of us found resonance in the themes, even though we're white, but class, father issues, acceptance, that crosses all races. Condola Rashad blew me away with her performance and there was no one there who was weak. Maybe a little too much music as it slowed down changes, but overall, very worth seeing. Perhaps the other reviewer just attended an off night? Or maybe just a matter of taste. People around us in the audience seemed to enjoy very much, judging by the reaction. Loved the set, as well. Glad I got introduced to this playwright and the work. Thinking about adding it to classes when I teach.
