WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Winner of seven 2008 Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical!
This musical is based on James Michener's Tales of the South Pacific, and features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, and a book by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan. It received the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. This new production is directed by Bartlett Sher, who won a Tony Award for his work.
Although well known for its extraordinary score -- the songs include "Some Enchanted Evening," "Younger Than Springtime," "Bali Ha'i," "There Is Nothin' Like A Dame," and "A Wonderful Guy" -- South Pacific is also a deeply felt drama. Its portrayal of Americans stationed in an alien culture in wartime is as relevant today as when it first thrilled audiences in 1949.

Full disclosure: South Pacific was the first show I ever saw on Broadway. Its beauty, humor, and power are in no small way responsible for why I write about theater today. So it's not in the cards that I'm going to say a discouraging word about this musical theater classic, which remains every beat and measure as magnificent as it was on its original opening night, April 7, 1949. While Bartlett Sher's current revival of South Pacific, now at Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theater, is not a perfect realization of the Richard Rodgers-Oscar Hammerstein-Joshua Logan musical; it's near enough that anyone caviling about its drawbacks for more than 10 seconds is just a spoil-sport.
