WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Bet you never thought you'd see this on Broadway! Imagine a town where it's no longer free to pee. Now imagine that's the subject of a new musical. The show is set in a Gotham-like city overwrought by ecological disaster. The water shortage has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets, and the privilege to pee is regulated by a single, malevolent corporation, which profits by charging admission for one of mankind's most basic needs. Urinetown was a hit during 1999's New York International Fringe Festival, and is now a presence on the Great White Way.
Charles Shaughnessy, who played distinguished Broadway producer Maxwell Sheffield on TV's The Nanny, stars as toilet magnate Caldwell B. Cladwell .
A limited number of $25 rush tickets are available at the box office 3 hours prior to each performance. Tickets are located in the last row of the orchestra, and limited to 2 per person.
May be appropriate for children 10 and older.
Children under 4 are not permitted into the theatre.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?
If Urinetown The Musical sounds like an obviously lowbrow piece of trash, flush that thought. You might tell us to piss off but, in this strong and competitive year, Urinetown is the most fully realized, most dynamic and entirely satisfying piece of musical theater produced on or Off-Broadway.
Don't get us wrong; The Producers is a stunning work of satiric genius. Bat Boy is a wonderfully batty fairy tale. One needn't knock the competition in order to extol the virtues of a truly inspired piece such as Urinetown, which does what musical theater does best: It makes its impact not with a budget, but with imagination. The alchemy of talented performers combined with witty songs and sensation[...]

Urinetown smells like a hit! As you probably know, the show has moved from Off-Broadway to Broadway following its initial production at the 1999 New York International Fringe Festival; it's now playing at The Henry Miller, where it opened last night with the cast of its recent Off-Broadway run at the ATA Theatre nearly intact. Despite its title, it has great potential for success as an innovative and amusing--albeit offbeat--musical about a town whose downtrodden residents must pay to relieve their bladders.
In its ATA incarnation, the show--with music by Mark Hollmann, book by Greg Kotis, and lyrics by both--still had the air of an underground cult happening. It seemed feverishly well in[...]
