WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Urban Cowboy was a 1980 movie that made a mechanical bull, a honky-tonk Texas bar, John Travolta, Debra Winger and a musical soundtrack world famous. Now, it comes back in musical form set in Gilley's bar, where the party gets underway to tunes like "Lookin' for Love in All the Wrong Places" and "Could I Have This Dance for the Rest of My Life". Will true love find its course at Gilley's, where everyone goes "Lookin' for Love"? Not until one cowboy holds his own on an intractable, mechanical bull. Lonny Price directs.
After recently announcing a closing date of 3/29/03, the musical has been given a reprieve and is continuing with performances through 5/18/03.

New York City may not have a country music station, but now that the stage musical adaptation of Urban Cowboy has opened here with shotguns blasting, the big city has a country show. Or a sorta-kinda country show, since most of the boot-stomping ditties written for the 1980 John Travolta-Debra Winger flick have been replaced on Broadway with numbers by the only somewhat countrified Bob Stillman and city slickers such as Jeff Blumenkrantz and Jason Robert Brown. This is a job in which the hyper-kinetic Brown sits at the on-stage piano, as he did for his exceptional The Last Five Years, and contributes reliably smart musical direction.
