WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Steel Magnolias, Robert Harling's celebration of a close-knit group of friends in a Southern beauty parlor, will finally debut on Broadway in the 2004-2005 season. Directed by Jason Moore (currently represented on Broadway with Avenue Q), Steel Magnolias is produced by Roy Gabay and Robyn Goodman. Delta Burke and Christine Ebersole head the cast.

Delta Burke first perched on a Designing Women diva divan and swapped clever remarks with her sharp-tongued lady pals on September 29, 1986. Well, she's still designing -- only now it's hair -- as Truvy, a small-town Louisiana beauty salon proprietor, in Steel Magnolias. The slimmed-down and remarkably unlined Burke is charging for shampoos and blow-drys in the Broadway premiere production of Robert Harling's warm-hearted play about women who, yes, swap clever remarks with sharp-tongued lady pals. The comedy, which is infused with poignant highlights (you'll pardon the expression), was originally presented at the WPA in 1987, not long after Designing Woman first brightened the tube.
