WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Nominated for 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical!

Shrek The Musical is based on the story and characters from William Steig's book Shrek!, as well as the DreamWorks Animation film Shrek, the first chapter of the popular movie series. It features book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize-winner David Lindsay-Abaire, and music by Jeanine Tesori. Jason Moore directs, with choreography by Josh Prince.

In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre -- not a handsome prince -- shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won't shut up, a bad guy with a SHORT temper, a cookie with an attitude, and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand...and his name is Shrek.

The cast includes stars Tony Award nominee Brian d'Arcy James as Shrek, Tony Award winner Sutton Foster as Princess Fiona, Tony Award nominee Christopher Sieber as Lord Farquaad, Tony Award nominee Daniel Breaker as Donkey and Tony Award nominee John Tartaglia as Pinocchio.

Each day, two hours prior to show time (12:00 p.m. for 2:00 p.m. matinees; 1:00 p.m. for 3:00 p.m. matinees; 5:00 p.m. for 7:00 PM performances; 6:00 p.m. for 8:00 p.m. performances), people who present themselves at the Broadway Theatre box office will have their names placed in a raffle drum. Thirty minutes later, names will be drawn at random for 16 seats at $26.50 each. Winners must be present in order to win and this lottery is available only in-person at the box office, with a limit of 2 tickets per person. Winners must provide photo ID at the time of purchase. Only one entry is allowed per person.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

Julie Taymor may have made adapting a blockbuster animated feature as a musical for the Broadway stage look like a piece of cake, but it ain't -- a fact proven by librettist-lyricist David Lindsay-Abaire, composer Jeanine Tesori, and director Jason Moore, who have gotten it very wrong with Shrek the Musical, now at the Broadway Theater.

Based on the 2001 animated movie version of William Steig's children's tale -- and maintaining some the screenplay's strongest bits -- the new musical once again focuses on the ogre Shrek (Brian d'Arcy James), who lives in a swamp and learns about love and not judging others by their appearances when rescuing a princess called Fiona (Sutton Foster) from a to[...]
