WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Based on E.L. Doctorow's acclaimed epic novel, Ragtime turns back the clock to the dawn of the 20th century - a time when anything was possible and ragtime music filled the air. New York City was the land of opportunity. A poor Jewish immigrant sells his "moving picture" books on the street. A wealthy Victorian couple welcomes a runaway into their home. A Harlem jazz pianist turns an issue of justice into a revolution. Their personal journeys come alive as historic figures offer guidance and diversion - among them escape artist Harry Houdini, auto tycoon Henry Ford, educator Booker T. Washington, and infamous entertainer Evelyn Nesbit. Together, their stories celebrate the struggle between tradition and independence all in pursuit of the American dream.

Two hours prior to each performance of Ragtime, patrons will be invited to enter a lottery drawing at the Neil Simon Theatre (250 West 52nd Street) for a limited number of $26.50 lottery tickets to that day's performance. Names will be drawn at random ninety minutes prior to curtain. There will be a limit of two tickets per person and tickets may be purchased using cash only. Winners must be present with valid identification at the time of the drawing to purchase their tickets.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

I consider Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty, and Terrence McNally's Ragtime, the great American musical of the late 20th Century, and Marcia Milgrim Dodge's revival of this panoramic look at troubled race relations in a shifting society, now at Broadway's Neil Simon Theatre, is every bit as rousing, as moving, and as trenchant on the subject of the American melting pot coming to a turbulent boil as any prior production of the show I've seen.

In the work, adapted from E.L. Doctorow's best-selling novel, ragtime music is used as a brilliant metaphor for the seismic change that came over this country at the start of the last century when the artificial barriers separating various masses huddled o[...]

Strong performances in a great show
I went to this show with minimal expectations, thinking because of the name it was primarily an African American show. I dont know why I thought this--it was not at all true. It was a wonderful historical account of life in NY in the early 1900s for whites, blacks and immigrants...how they mixed or didnt mix. It depicted the political and social climate extremely well, and I felt I learned something. The performances were superb--full of honesty and emotion. I was so happy that I didnt let my misconceptions prevent me from seeing such a well-done show.
