WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Laura Linney and Ben Daniels star in the Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of Christopher Hampton's Les Liaisons Dangereuses, directed by Rufus Norris.

The definitive battle of the sexes springs to life in this Tony Award-nominated classic, adapted from the novel by Choderlos de Laclos. For long-time friends and occasional lovers Vicomte de Valmont and Marquise de Merteuil, love is simply a game of chess. But in a few false moves, they're about to find themselves locked in the ultimate checkmate. Filled with seduction, betrayal, and plenty of illicit passion, this dark comedy paints the pre-Revolutionary French aristocracy in all its cynicism and decadence.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

No argument is likely to flare up when I say that Laura Linney as La Marquise de Merteuil in the Roundabout Theatre's accomplished revival of Christopher Hampton's
Les Liaisons Dangereuses is more exquisite than anyone else currently on Broadway. Looking as if painted by Francois Boucher, she commands the stage in the gorgeous satins that Katrina Lindsay has designed -- undoubtedly after studying myriad court portraits of pre-Revolutionary France. Amid the theatrical draperies set designer Scott Pask has hung everywhere, Linney -- with her face giving the impression of roses reflected in porcelain and her hair intricately coiffured by wig-maker Paul Huntley -- is simply breathtaking.

Diabolically fun
Mamie Gummer shines as Cecile, going from a naive convent girl to an overtly sexual woman with beautiful skill and ease. Her "educator" in becoming a woman, Vicomte de Valmont, is also expertly played by Ben Dainels, through his mix of charm, manipulation, and selfishness. As La Marquise de Merteuil, Laura Linney defines icy aristocracy in her actions and movements, yet reveals some of the pain and jealousy she used to feel though subtle expressions in her eyes and clenched jaw.
