WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Maximilian Schell and George Grizzard star in Abby Mann's Judgment at Nuremberg. This harrowing drama explores the trials of the Nazi judges for their direct influence in the horrendous war crimes after the end of World War II. These trials had far-reaching effects as they rejected the argument that orders from superiors relieve people from responsibility for war crimes. Directed by John Tillinger, the show also features Michael Hayden, Robert Foxworth, Marthe Keller, and Joseph Wieseman.

Early in the court proceedings covered in the stage version of Judgment at Nuremberg now running on Broadway, adapted by Abby Mann from his 1959 teleplay and subsequent novel, it's stated that human character is on trial. Ostensibly, it's the character of the men in the dock--all of them judges who remained on the bench when German justice was muzzled by National Socialist policy. But Mann is clearly interested as well in the character of nations, and whether it can be fairly gauged by the actions of a discrete segment of the population.
