WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

In the Heights is the 2008 Tony Award winner for Best Musical.

With music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and a book by Quiara Alegria Hudes, the show is directed by Thomas Kail and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler.

In the Heights is a quintessential New York musical about a vibrant and tight-knit community at the top of the island of Manhattan. The music pulses with the hopes and dreams of three generations as they struggle to forge an identity in a neighborhood on the brink of transition.

The Off-Broadway production received numerous accolades, including Outer Critics and Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Musical and Choreography, Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Choreography and Ensemble Performance, Obie Awards for Outstanding Music and Lyrics, and Clarence Derwent and Theatre World Awards for Miranda.

$26.50 front-row tickets will be available by lottery before every performance at the Richard Rodgers Theatre box office -- CASH ONLY! Each person will print their name and the number of tickets (1 or 2) they wish to purchase on a card provided by the box office starting 2 1/2 hours before curtain. The winners will be drawn 2 hours before curtain.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

American Idol winner Jordin Sparks' Broadway debut in the Tony Award-winning musical, In the Heights, is sure to please her many fans, but is not an unqualified success. It's also not the only uneven performance in the show, which continues an open run at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

The musical chronicles the lives of a tight-knit, mostly Latino community in Washington Heights. Sparks plays Nina, the daughter of Kevin and Camila Rosario (Rick Negron and Priscilla Lopez, respectively), who has returned to the neighborhood after making a go of it at Stanford University -- and failing. She's lost her academic scholarship and is ready to quit school, much to her parents' dismay.

Corbin Bleu makes an impressive Broadway debut in the 2008 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, In the Heights, performing at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. Best known for his role of Chad Danforth in Disney's High School Musical franchise, Bleu has taken over the lead role of Usnavi (originated by the show's composer and lyricist, Lin-Manuel Miranda), in this tuner that chronicles a few tumultuous days in the lives of a handful of residents in the neighborhood of Washington Heights.

From the show's opening moments, as Usnavi sets the scene in the mostly rapped title song, you know you're in good hands. Bleu has a commanding presence, a winning smile, and a thoroughly likable persona. His cri[...]

Making a triumphant move from its award-winning Off-Broadway run last year,
In the Heights, now ensconced at Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre, is simply exploding with talent. More important, without question, this extraordinary show will turn out to be the most important and influential musical of the season.

The title of the show, which features a score by Lin-Manuel Miranda and a book by Quiara Alegria Hudes, refers to Washington Heights, the contemporary New York City barrio where plenty of Latin-Americans live, work, love, and dream. We are introduced to a tight-knit community of Heights' residents going about their business on designer Anna Louizos' stunning set, consisting of aging[...]

An Authentic Story of Humanity
"In the Heights" is a truly beautiful story about a community in need. Its inhabitants seek validation and a place in this world as their neighborhood shifts to gradually move them out. All of the music is enlivening, entrancing, and FUN. This show has it all--drama, comedy, romance, even action. This story speaks to the hearts of all humans because no matter our race, how we look, or where we come from, we all have aspirations and dreams and seek to be something in this world. And guess what--I met the producer on the PATH train one morning last year! He is a wonderful man, very humble and down to earth. God bless him for blessing me and my boyfriend not only with his kind words and friendly character, but with the orchestra tickets to see this show last summer. He was very wise to produce "In the Heights" and I am very happy that I was able to experience it before it closed. I hope it comes back so my mother and sister and father can experience the awesomeness as well!
