WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
David Mamet's classic American comic drama American Buffalo centers on the bungled robbery of a rare and valuable American Buffalo nickel from a neighborhood collector. Directed by Tony Award winner Robert Falls and starring Tony Award nominee John Leguizamo, and in their Broadway debuts, Cedric the Entertainer and Academy Award nominee Haley Joel Osment, the play follows three small-time crooks who wax philosophically about society while conspiring to steal the coin. Volcanic and motor mouthed Teach (Leguizamo) schemes and spars with fatherly, street-smart junk shop owner Donny (Cedric the Entertainer) enlisting Bobby (Osment), a slow-witted and desperate young delinquent, to carry out their misbegotten robbery. A hilarious, banter-fueled heist comedy and a heartbreaking portrait of criminal desperation, American Buffalo's all-star cast is powered by David Mamet's stark, rapid-fire, uniquely American and unforgettable dialogue.

Just about everyone in theater is familiar with Anton Chekhov's comment that, to paraphrase, says once a gun is seen on stage it better go off before the play's over. So what would he think about David Mamet's career-making American Buffalo, which director Robert Falls is giving an effective if not explosive revival at the Belasco, in which small-time crook Teach (John Leguizamo) draws a pistol, but the trigger is never pulled?
Who knows? But any theatergoer must admit that Mamet -- the master of creating the male animal flailing about in desperate attempts to make something of himself -- cannily transforms this silent prop into a potent metaphor for impotence that no amount of Viagra can[...]
