WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
A Catered Affair is set in The Bronx, 1953. Funny, heartbreaking and oh so human, the musical reveals relationships strained to their limits when a couple must decide whether to spend their life savings on a family business or to launch their only daughter's marriage with a lavish catered affair. Harvey Fierstein's book and John Bucchino's score seize the opportunity to explore the meaning of family and the need for love, both new and reawakened.

Low-key and engaging
"A Catered Affair" is a quiet chamber piece, and unfortunately that is what doomed it. Hemmed in by the bright lights and spectacle of such megahits as "Wicked", "Rent", "Phantom", and others, it got drowned out in the roar of the modern theater scene.
The score is lovely, with melodies that float gently by the ears. The lyrics enter the heart and soul of every character and never leave. The actors performance, as preserved on CD, is phenomenal. If you ever get a chance to see this gem locally, do it. You wont be disappointed.

Anyone familiar with Paddy Chayefsky's 1955 teleplay The Catered Affair -- which was then adapted by Gore Vidal for a 1956 film starring Bette Davis -- will understand what the industrious contingent bringing the musical
A Catered Affair to Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre had in mind. Librettist Harvey Fierstein, songwriter John Bucchino, and director John Doyle obviously wanted to recreate the low-key naturalism that was Chayefsky's stock-in-trade during his acclaimed Philco-Goodyear Playhouse days.
But even audience members familiar with the tuner's provenance may think that this 90-minute chamber musical would fare better in a smaller auditorium instead of falling too timidly over the li[...]
