WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Lincoln Center Theater will present Rose, a new play by Martin Sherman, starring Olympia Dukakis. From a bench on Miami Beach, Rose looks back on her life, which began in a tiny Russian village, took her to Warsaw's ghettos and a ship called "the Exodus". Her story then recounts the boardwalks of Atlantic City, the Arizona canyons and the salsa-flavored nights in Miami Beach. It creates a sharply drawn portrait of a feisty Jewish woman and a moving reminder of some of the events that shaped the last century.

She doesn't physically rise from that bench until the play is over, but emotions sweep across the stage and over the audience with the tidal wave of her testimony. Her life story is bracketed by the story of a young girl's shocking murder; both tales define our time and challenge our humanity.
