Synopsis

Based on E.L. Doctorow's acclaimed epic novel, Ragtime turns back the clock to the dawn of the 20th century - a time when anything was possible and ragtime music filled the air. New York City was the land of opportunity. A poor Jewish immigrant sells his "moving picture" books on the street. A wealthy Victorian couple welcomes a runaway into their home. A Harlem jazz pianist turns an issue of justice into a revolution. Their personal journeys come alive as historic figures offer guidance and diversion - among them escape artist Harry Houdini, auto tycoon Henry Ford, educator Booker T. Washington, and infamous entertainer Evelyn Nesbit. Together, their stories celebrate the struggle between tradition and independence all in pursuit of the American dream.

Two hours prior to each performance of Ragtime, patrons will be invited to enter a lottery drawing at the Neil Simon Theatre (250 West 52nd Street) for a limited number of $26.50 lottery tickets to that day's performance. Names will be drawn at random ninety minutes prior to curtain. There will be a limit of two tickets per person and tickets may be purchased using cash only. Winners must be present with valid identification at the time of the drawing to purchase their tickets.

Review: Strong performances in a great show by timmaccallum

I went to this show with minimal expectations, thinking because of the name it was primarily an African American show. I dont know why I thought this--it was not at all true. It was a wonderful historical account of life in NY in the early 1900s for whites, blacks and immigrants...how they mixed or didnt mix. It depicted the political and social climate extremely well, and I felt I learned something. The performances were superb--full of honesty and emotion. I was so happy that I didnt let my misconceptions prevent me from seeing such a well-done show.

Review: A Great Musical Production by lvanwagner

I really enjoyed Ragtime--its a big, old-fashioned musical with talented actor/singers, a great set, a full orchestra, and beautiful costumes. How can you go wrong?

Review: Superb! by rube2424

Just back from seeing this magnificent production and am looking forward to seeing it soon again. It has been a long time since everyone and everything in a Broadway musical melded into a superb whole, and in RAGTIME they do. Quentin Earl Dorrington and Christine Noll brilliantly led the rest of this talented cast, and the audience was with them from the moment the curtain went up. Note: If the overtures to GYPSY and CANDIDE are considered the greatest in musical theater history, can anyone doubt that the opening ensemble in RAGTIME is the very best of its kind? Kudos to everyone involved, especially director Marcia Milgrom Dodge whose brilliance is in evidence in every scene. A great, great production. Go, by all means!

Review: Blown Away by psusarah

Ragtime is a reminder of what Broadway is meant to be. A new and wonderful talent, Stephanie Umoh gave me chills during her performance. Her counter part Quentin Earl Darrington made it seem as if the role was written for him. Subtle changes from the original production and a vibrant energy made this the best show Ive seen in years!!!!
