Flashback Friday: The Lion King's First Iconic Reimagining Performs at 1998 Tonys

The beloved story will be remade once again, this time for a return to film.

Earlier this week, we got the news that The Lion King may be destined for the silver screen — again! The show has already gone from screen to stage, and quite successfully at that as the musical. Now in its 18th year on Broadway, the show consistently outgrosses even the latest musical phenomenon Hamilton.

With the blockbuster property now making its way back to the screen as a reimagining in the vein of the recent Jungle Book and upcoming Beauty and the Beast films, die-hard Lion King fans will be feeling the love for Pride Rock all over again. While we wait for this next installment of The Lion King empire to come to fruition, take a look back at the 1998 Tony Awards, where the musical's first Broadway cast launched the show's record-breaking tenure.
