Broadway's The Phantom of the Opera Turns 28

The long-running Andrew Lloyd Webber musical celebrated its birthday on January 26.

The long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera celebrated yet another milestone on January 26 — its 28th birthday at the Majestic Theatre.

Performance number 11,649 featured a cast led by Drama Desk Award nominee James Barbour in the title role, alongside Julia Udine as Christine, Jeremy Hays as Raoul, Ellen Harvey as Madame Giry, Michele McConnell as Carlotta, Christian Šebek as Piangi, Kara Klein as Meg Giry, Greg Mills as Monsieur André, and Craig Bennett as Monsieur Firmin. Rachel Zatcoff performs the role of Christine twice weekly.

Directed by Harold Prince and based on the novel by Gaston Leroux, the show features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Charles Hart, and a book by Richard Stilgoe and Lloyd Webber. The production is designed by Maria Björnson, with lighting by Andrew Bridge and sound design by Mick Potter (original sound by Martin Levan). Musical staging and choreography is by Gillian Lynne. Orchestrations are by David Cullen and Lloyd Webber.
