Jevon McFerrin, who has been performing the title role in Broadway's Hamilton as an alternate to the musical's lead, Javier Muñoz, will step into the role full-time effective immediately while Muñoz takes a medical leave to recover from a physical injury. Muñoz will return to the production following his recuperation.

Understudies in the role of Alexander Hamilton on Broadway are Donald Webber Jr. and Jon Rua, a returning member of the original cast.

With book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, and music direction and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, Hamilton is based on Ron Chernow's biography of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. The musical tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington's right-hand man during the Revolutionary War, and was the new nation's first treasury secretary. The production began performances at Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre on August 6, 2015.

The show's cast also currently features Brandon Victor Dixon as Aaron Burr, Mandy Gonzalez as Angelica Schuyler, Bryan Terrell Clark as George Washington, Lexi Lawson as Eliza Hamilton, Michael Luwoye as Muñoz's alternate, J. Quinton Johnson as Hercules Mulligan and James Madison, Jordan Fisher as John Laurens and Philip Hamilton, and Seth Stewart as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson.
