Flashback Friday: When The Producers Was the Hamilton of 2001

Remembering the Tony performance that took us all to Little Old Lady Land.

As Sunday's Tony Award festivities approach, Hamilton gets closer to potentially making more history-making moments on Broadway. It's already clinched a record-breaking 16 nominations, surpassing the 15 held by its tying predecessors Billy Elliot and the show we're flashing back to — The Producers.

In 2001, getting a ticket to The Producers was like — getting a ticket to Hamilton. The show, starring the incomparable Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, took Broadway by storm and racked up an unprecedented 12 Tony wins during the 2000-01 season. In anticipation of another groundbreaking ceremony, here's footage of The Producers cast performing on the Radio City Music Hall stage and proving why they deserved all the hardware.
