Flashback Friday: Stark Sands Launched Kinky Boots' History of Right Guys

As Brendon Urie joins the cast, we’re looking back at Broadway’s first Charlie Price.

Kinky Boots, which recently celebrated its fourth anniversary on Broadway, ushers in its newest leading man tonight at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Brendon Urie, best known as frontman for the band Panic! At the Disco, makes his Broadway debut as shoe factory owner Charlie Price, taking on the role through August 6.

The line of succession grows longer and longer as Kinky Boots continues its impressive Broadway tenure, but we decided to spend this Friday remembering our first Charlie, Stark Sands. He originated the role back in 2013, earning a Tony nomination for his performance — largely thanks to the second act showstopper "Soul of a Man." Take a look at Sands performing the Tony-winning Cyndi Lauper tune, both onstage and in the recording booth, where he laid down the track we've all had on repeat for the past four years.

(And if you want a taste of Urie's take on the song, get a first listen here.)
