PHOTO FLASH: War Horse Puppets Prance on Lincoln Center’s Illumination Lawn

The horse puppets from Broadway’s War Horse opened Lincoln Center’s Illumination Lawn for the summer season on Tuesday, May 10. With the aid of puppeteers, the horses pranced around to the delight of onlookers, including young ballet students from the School of American Ballet.

War Horse, performing in the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, is based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, and adapted by Nick Stafford with the Handspring Puppet Company. The play is set during World War I as Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France. Albert, who cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, embarks on a mission to find him and bring him home.

The production received five 2011 Tony Award nominations, as well as a Special Tony Award for Handspring Puppet Company.
