The 57th Annual Clarence Derwent Awards have been bestowed upon actor Sam Robards, currently distinguishing himself as immigrant auto mechanic Gus Eberson in the Broadway revival of Arthur Miller's The Man Who Had All the Luck, and actress Anne Hathaway, who starred as Lili in the Encores! staging of Carnival earlier this season.

Each year, the Derwent honor is given to the male and female performers who are considered by the awards committee to be the most promising on the New York metropolitan scene. The awards will be presented on Tuesday, June 11 at the Eastern Regional Board meeting of Actors' Equity Association.

Sam Robards is the son of the late Jason Robards and Lauren Bacall. He has already amassed some notable film and stage credits, having appeared on screen in A.I. and American Beauty and Off-Broadway in Michael Weller's Moonchildren and Nicky Silver's The

Altruists, but The Man Who Had All the Luck marks his Broadway debut. In addition to this most recent honor, Robards has received Drama Desk and Tony nominations in the Best Featured Actor in a Play category for this role. Anne Hathaway, who is only 19 years old and currently attending Vassar College, made her breathrough performance in the 2001 film The Princess Diaries (which also starred Julie Andrews). Carnival was her New York City stage debut.

Past recipients of the Clarence Derwent Award include Gene Hackman, John Malkovich, Mercedes Ruehl, Kristin Chenoweth, and Morgan Freeman. The honor is named for a former president of Actors' Equity.
