Broadway's The Country Girl to Open April 27; Auberjonois, Camp, Rooney, Zien Join Cast

The play, which premiered on Broadway in 1950, is about a down-on-his luck alcoholic actor (Freeman) and his unhappy wife (McDormand), whose fortunes look to change when he is offered a role by a hot-shot director (Gallagher).
The creative team will include Tim Hatley (scenic design), Albert Wolsky (costume design), Natasha Katz (lighting design), and Acme Sound Partners (sound design). Nichols, one of the most awarded directors in theatrical history, is currently represented by Monty Python's Spamalot, for which he won the Tony Award.
Freeman received a Tony Award nomination in 1978 for The Mighty Gents; his other Broadway credits include Purlie and The Gospel at Colonnus. McDormand received a Tony nomination for playing Stella in the 1988 revival of A Streetcar Named Desire and played Hennie in the 1984 revival of Awake and Sing!. Gallagher received a Tony nomination for the 1986 revival of Long Day's Journey Into Night; his other Broadway credits include Grease, A Doll's Life, Noises Off and Guys and Dolls.
Auberjonois last appeared on Broadway in Frost/Nixon, Camp has appeared Off-Broadway in The Scene, columbinus and God Hates the Irish. Rooney appeared in Henry IV at Lincoln Center and recently starred Off-Broadway in Yellow Face. Zien's numerous Broadway credits include Into the Woods, Falsettos, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and he will appear next week in the City Center Encores! production of Applause.
