Synopsis

Laura Linney and Ben Daniels star in the Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of Christopher Hampton's Les Liaisons Dangereuses, directed by Rufus Norris.

The definitive battle of the sexes springs to life in this Tony Award-nominated classic, adapted from the novel by Choderlos de Laclos. For long-time friends and occasional lovers Vicomte de Valmont and Marquise de Merteuil, love is simply a game of chess. But in a few false moves, they're about to find themselves locked in the ultimate checkmate. Filled with seduction, betrayal, and plenty of illicit passion, this dark comedy paints the pre-Revolutionary French aristocracy in all its cynicism and decadence.

Review: Diabolically fun by kcbrad30

Mamie Gummer shines as Cecile, going from a naive convent girl to an overtly sexual woman with beautiful skill and ease. Her "educator" in becoming a woman, Vicomte de Valmont, is also expertly played by Ben Dainels, through his mix of charm, manipulation, and selfishness. As La Marquise de Merteuil, Laura Linney defines icy aristocracy in her actions and movements, yet reveals some of the pain and jealousy she used to feel though subtle expressions in her eyes and clenched jaw.
