Synopsis

Patti LuPone, Boyd Gaines, and Laura Benanti star in Gypsy, directed by multiple Tony Award winner and author of the musical Arthur Laurents.

The new production is based on the critically acclaimed New York City Center Encores! production which enjoyed a triumphant three-week run in July. LuPone will lead the cast in the role of "Rose," the quintessential stage mother, joined by Gaines as "Herbie" and Benanti as "Louise," the daughter who transforms into the title character of "Gypsy" in this musical fable suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee.

The book is by two-time Tony Award winning legend Arthur Laurents, with music by two-time Tony Award winner Jule Styne and lyrics by multiple Tony Award winner Stephen Sondheim. The 1959 blockbuster, originally directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins, boasts a legendary score with such classic songs as "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "Rose's Turn" and "Some People."

Review: RUN to the St. James ..... by morsesline

to see this revival of Gypsy before Patti Lupone, Boyd Gaines, and Laura Benanti go their separate ways. A superlative ensemble under inspired direction restores a dark edges of this landmark musical. This stunning production evokes an era, part vaudeville and part burlesque, in which American theatre struggled for legitimacy. It was a pleasure to share the company of Miss Gypsy Rose Lee for two fleeting hours.
