Loved It

Denzel Washington and Viola Davis were phenomenal! As a child this was the first play I ever saw so it will always have a place in my heart. I remember hearing and seeing James Earl Jones and being mesmerized by his voice and talent. The performance of Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson, Stephen Henderson, Chris Chalk, and Eden Duncan-Smith was awesome. What can I say I was blown away by all of the talent on stage last night. I hope they extend the play for everyone to see Denzel and Viola great chemistry and skill on Broadway.

A wonderful production with a steller cast. Denzel Washington and Viola Davis are magic working together in this revival of an August Wilson classic!

Wonderful productions with a wining cast headed by Denzel Washington and Viola Davis

This Fence is Solid As A Rock!

August Wilson is a heralded Pulitzer prize winning playwright for good reasons. He writes about the Black experience with such depth and honesty, its easy to identify with his characters. The material for Fences was phenomenal, providing all of the actors with rich, substantive material to work with. And did they work! Denzel was ideal for the role of Troy Maxson, conflicted ball player turned sanitation worker, at odds with his family and the changing world around him. Viola Davis sparkled as Rose, a warm companion, steadfast in her devotion to her husband and their family. For brevity, I only mention these two actors, but rest assured Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson Stephen Henderson and Chris Chalk all delivered stellar performances, adding to the allure and luster of Fences. You dont just see an August Wilson production, you experience a world on stage that mimics your own or those of people around you. Its vitally important that the work of this playwright continues to be seen so that emerging theater audiences can experience his brilliance. Fences may be my favorite August Wilson shows. I look forward to revisiting many more of his productions.

Pearly Mae

The play and all the performances were fantastic. The acting of Denzel, Viola and Mykelti were just out of this world !! I cant explain how much I truly enjoyed this play. I didnt get to see this play when James Earl Jones and Mary Alice were in it and Im sure their performances were good, but, Denzel did what Denzel normally does - give the best performance ever. Viola is a great actress !! Im glad shes beginning to get her just rewards.

Fences

Denzel Washington gives a performance that is outstanding! He is dynamic and powerful without overpowering the other actors on stage. By the way, the performance of each of the other actors is equally phenomenal! August Wilsons words come alive and you feel the emotion in every phrase.

Wonderful!

There were no discounted tickets available over my last weekend in NYC, and I had to buy a "Premium" one for a ridiculous price that Im ashamed to even mention. P.S. -- outside the door of the theater, there was a guy with one to sell for a third of what I paid. But how could one know? Anyway, the show was worth every penny. Denzel is so incredibly AMIABLE. I know him personally, very slightly. His character is a mixed bag of strengths and weaknesses. But because its Denzel, you always like him, and are shocked when he does something less than admirable. The contrast between the actors persona and the characters character was not as dramatic as "Training Day". But the "Fences" show, published in 1987, when people still bothered to write, is totally believable -- except for one plot contrivance, which is, however, dramatically necessary. The play won every kind of award imaginable when it was published, and deserved them. The experience of Denzel playing both to and against his type in the intimacy of the theater was amazing. As a long-time Theatermaniac, I would have to say that this was one of the best shows Ive ever seen. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_Wilson

FENCES REVISITED 23 YEARS LATER

I saw James Earl Jones in1987 and thought he was titinic in it.Denzel Washingtons take was different but just as valid and heroic. Viola Davis was beyond great as his wife The best performance by an actress in a play this year by far. The play is August Wilson at his best. Very much worth seeing again after 23 years.

Fences

This play is excellent. The entire cast was great. I saw the play in the 80s and was good then also.

Intense!

This play had my friend and I both laughing and crying. We sat in the second row so we definitely felt like we were part of the "family" and when Troys wife, Rose, lashed out at him for having an affair, I accidentally said aloud my agreement with her feelings having been there myself. Amazing performances by entire cast.

Wonderful

Saw the play first night of preview, terrific acting, much funnier than I anticipated in a drama

Powerful

The cast worked great together. Opening night there were a few blunders in script. Minor as they may be, yet if you focused you would of noticed them. Viloa was moving as she ripped into Denzel for his infidelity. This cast and play is well worth the price of admission twice.

RE:Fences 4/13 Dress Rehearsal

As expected, this cadre of "heavyweights" brought realism and depth to the characters they portraited. We all know that Denzel doesnt know any better than to bring magic to a roll but everyone elses work product is enlivened as well. 4 Stars because this system does not have 4 & 1/2 and not 5 because it was not perfect, I just dont know what, if anything, wasnt!
