American Idiot

I am a classical music lover, but this show and music was just great!

by MChidlovsky2907 on Wednesday, Apr 13th, 2011 at 8:18 am
I am never listen to this kind of music and after the openning song was about to leave... But as the show progressed, it was more and more enjoyable to me. I loved it so much that later on I searched and listened again for the songs from the show on uTube.

Im glad that i did not pay for this. It was loud, negative and lacking a plot. We left about half way through the performance.

Waste of time...

Honestly, Ive seen music videos with a better developed plot. This was nothing more than a GreenDay concert.

Just OK......

Thank goodness I didnt pay full price on this. I know enough Green Day songs to appreciate the music - went home after the show to download songs from the show that I didnt already have. Plot was very weak.

worth the 5 BUCKS!

Pretty CUTE show, made me think: aaaawww, thats how i felt when i was 20!! Green Days music is fine, though it was pretty much like sitting through a whole Green Day CD nonstop... Besides that, I wouldnt pay a full price ticket for it!

Not for everyone. Very loud high energy rock not classic rock music. Plot was extremely difficult to follow. If you are planning on seeing only one Broadway show this year, especialy if you are over 30, this is not the one for you.

A show about a heroin..........etc

You need 2 things to appreciate this show. Good seats and a love for "Green Day."

A spectacle worth missing

"American Idiot" is not, as TM describes it, "arguably the best musical of the season" - that award goes to "The Scottsboro Boys. I am completely baffled at the way so many critics fell in love with this train wreck of a show. With no book, no plot, the only thing holding this show together is the music and visuals. The music is simply okay, nothing special at all. The visuals however... the visuals are amazing. The set is eye-popping and perfect for the show it is serving, the costumes are spot-on, and the choreography isnt too shabby either. However, a good musical is determined by its plot and the way it is advanced by the songs. "Idiot" comes nowhere near hitting either of those marks.

An okay show.

This play is high energy with the best group of musician/actors put together in a very long time. Dancing and choreography is great - so much going on you discover something new in every corner of the stage. Tony Vincent, Michael esper and Miguel could not have been nicer to us outside the theater and during the show they came over and played guitar at them !!!! WOO HOO go see it - this will be around for years !!!!!

Eh....

Although Green Day is an awesome band. They should probably stick to just making music. I love this CD, but its a failed attempt as a musical. Choreography was terrible and it was basically just a bunch of kids on stage singing Green Day songs. I would be surprised if this stays on Broadway for another year.

Well, I admit to not knowing the album, but I didnt get the storyline at all. The choreography was actually quite good, and I even detected melody, but what the heck was going on?

AMERICAN IDIOT IS LIVELY AND COLORFUL

I normally dont go for loud rock musicals, but I had a very good time at this one. The beat is lively and the plot is surprisingly moving. The production values are all first rate. This show is brimming with talent and creative know-how. Very much worth seeing.

Ive seen it twice already, and as I did with Spring Awakening in the past, I plan to see it several more times. It deservedly brought the house down! Bravo to all concerned!

RE:The malaise of all rock operas

American Idiot works great as rock album in very much the same manner Tommy, The Wall, and Sgt. Peppers did; the minds eye fills in the gaps in the plot line. For a live theatre show, the creative team must fill in those holes; unfortunately, American Idiot does not even attempt to do so. Its a shame. The music has the potential to make fantastic commentary on the state of the American Empire and its young citizenry.
