Synopsis

What lies between Black and White, boy and man, rock and opera, dreams and reality?

In a ground-breaking collaboration, The Theater Offensive (TTO), New England's leading stage for multicultural gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender theater, will join forces with the region's leading professional venue for diverse young audiences, Wheelock Family Theatre (WFT), for the world premiere of Daniel Alexander Jones' Bel Canto. After an intensive development process at the 2002 Sundance Institute Summer Play Lab in Utah, two of America's most compelling contemporary theater artists, Jones and Robbie McCauley (director) will bring this magical American journey of sexual and artistic discovery to the stage.

1978. Benjamin Turner is sixteen years old and new to town. His Dad has dodged the draft, disappeared and his Mom couldn't wait forever. She has moved them from Berkeley, CA to Springfield, MA. When he encounters his school nurse, the spirit of Marian Anderson, the music of Jimi Hendrix, a fiery opera teacher and a boy who ignites his love, Benjamin faces the beauty and terror of life's deepest truths.

Audio Description and ASL interpretation on Fri June 20 and Sun June 22.
