A librarian went into work and retrieved a book from the return slot--a book 123 years overdue. In his earnest quest to track down this literary scoff-law, the librarian--who has never before left his native town of Hoofddorp, Holland--tears off to London, China, Australia, Germany and the US. He eats strange foods, breaks rules, sees Les Miserables in several languages and uses up a lifetime's worth of vacation days, learning how to live in the process.
