The Zoo Story is American playwright Edward Albee's first play. Written in 1958, it is considered a well-crafted, often unsympathetic examination of the modern condition. The play is about how a man who is consumed with loneliness starts up conversation with another man on a bench in Central Park, eventually forcing him to participate in an act of violence. Combining both realistic and absurd elements, Albee has constructed a short but multi-leveled play known for its relentlessly modern voice, gritty and physical look at social class distinction, broken interpersonal communication links, and the search for human identity.
