Nicky Silver's Pterodactyls concerns a unique family who lives in complete denial. While they show their denial in different ways, they muddle through life totally oblivious. It starts out when Emma and Tommy venture to Emma's family's home to tell them that they are engaged. While they've only known each other for two weeks, Emma is ecstatic to tell her family. Tommy is an orphan, so he is ecstatic to belong to a family. Grace, Emma's mother, finally comes home from shopping and barely listens to her daughter's announcement before turning Tommy into the new maid, so they could get to know him, and the other maid had just quit.
