WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

How I Learned to Drive, the Pulitzer Prize winning play by Paula Vogel, provides insight into a family experiencing the devastating love of an uncle for his young niece. The audience is given a glimpse into the mindset of an adult doing the unthinkable, and the family that looks the other way. How I Learned to Drive is "a coming of age play...a love story about good people who cross the lines and get confused." Told with warmth, humor, and honesty, How I Learned to Drive uses the metaphor of driving lessons to explore issues of independence, power, and responsibility, as a girl becomes a young woman learning the rules of the road and life from behind the wheel. Director Celia Couture has an impressive and lenghty resume, and is the perfect director to bring this play to the AFD stage. Her skill at handling sensitive subject matter is evident with her direction of Wit, The Laramie Project, and M. Butterfly, all presented at AFD, and all winners of prestigious theatrical awards. This will prove to be an unforgettable theater experience. Because this riveting drama addresses mature themes, it is not recommended for children.
