WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Horns and Halos (2002) captures the unlikely connection of three men - a U.S. president, a discredited author, and an underground publisher - whose paths to power and popularity tangle in a book. Working in the direct cinema tradition of the Maysles Brothers, the filmmakers follow the bizarre, sad saga of unknown sci-fi writer, celebrity biographer and convicted felon J.H Hatfield, who jumped to national prominence with the 1999 publication, recall and subsequent publication of his controversial George W. Bush bio, Fortunate Son. The funny, maddening and ultimately shocking behind-the-scenes look at the down-and-dirty world of publishing focuses on "punk of publishing" Sander Hicks of Soft Skull press, who operates out of a tenement basement on New York City's Lower East Side. Horns and Halos has been the recipient of the following awards: Winner "Best Documentary" [2002New York Underground Film Festival], Winner "Best Documentary"[ 2002 Chicago Underground Film Festival], Official Selection [2002 Toronto International Film Festival] and Official Selection [2002 Rotterdam International Film Festival.]

Through its National Political Leadership Development Program, the Center for Progressive Leadership (CPL) is dedicated to building the next generation of political leaders by connecting emerging progressive leaders
on the local level with national resources and networks. Proceeds from the film screening will support CPL, a non-profit organization providing political leadership development for progressive leaders. For more information on CPL, log onto www.progressleaders.org.
