WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Cookin' At the Cookery: The music and times of Alberta Hunter is a musical written and directed by Marion J. Caffey, with music arranged by Danny Holgate. The colorful life of notorious jazz and blues singer Alberta Hunter comes
alive in this uplifting and humorous musical biography. In a remarkable career spanning seven decades and two continents, Alberta Hunter shared the stage with such greats as Louis Armstrong, Josephine Baker, and Fats Waller. Her bold and sultry singing style, combined with her unique blend
of suggestive lyrics and playful posturing, was a favorite with audiences.
She wowed the crowds at the "Cookery" in New York's Greenwich Village where she made her re-entry into show business at age 82, after a 20-year hiatus as a nurse. In a satisfying blend of jazz, blues, and cabaret-style pop, this musical includes such memorable tunes as "Rough and Ready Man," "Sweet Georgia Brown," "The Darktown Strutter's Ball," "Handy Man," and "I'm Havin' A Good Time."
