WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Opera Boston kicks off it's 2003/2004 season with Leonard Bernstein's beloved operetta, Candide. Based on the on the novel by Voltaire, Candide is a story of enduring optimism in the face of mounting tragedy. Candide, bastard nephew of the Baron and Baroness of Westphalia, is banished from his home after confessing his love for their daughter, Cunegonde. Out in the wilderness, Candide seeks comfort in the philosophy of his teacher, Dr. Pangloss, that all is for the best in "the best of all possible worlds." However, this proves difficult amidst the war, torture, murder, extradition, and piracy that separates Candide from his companions and carries him across the globe through many misadventures.
