Presented in collaboration with Emerson Stage and Central Square Theater, The Taste of Sunrise by Susan Zeder begins performances tonight at the Wheelock Family Theatre.

Directed by Wendy Lement and Kristin Johsnson, the play centers around Tuc, a deaf boy navigating the stark world of the Midwest in Ware, Illinois. It takes audiences through the childhood fever dreams that led to his deafness, the language he has created with his father, and his discovery of sign language at his deaf school. The performance examines the intricacies of love, loss, and language experienced by one family.

An ensemble of deaf and hearing directors, designers, and actors asks people to explore the cultural complexities of deafness with both humor and compassion.

The creative team includes Peter Steward (composer), Patricia Manalo Bochnak (choreography), Annie Weigand (light design), Lisa Simpson (costume design), and Janie Howland (set design).

Performances will run through March 22.
