Lyric Stage Company presents Saturday Night/Sunday Morning, which begins its run this evening.

The show tells the story of seven African-American women who come together in a Memphis beauty parlor/boarding house. Taking place during the final days of World War II, the women must come to terms with the uncertainties of the future and the terrifying question of not only when, but if, their husbands will return. They fight dirty during this tumultuous time with each other and with their own fears and desires and discover new levels of friendship and love.

Dawn M. Simmons directs Olivier Award winner Katori Hall’s new play, which features Meagan Dilworth as Taffy, Jasmine Rush as Miss Mary, Cloteal L. Horne as Mabel, Jade Guerra as Leanne, Keith Mascoll as Buzz, Ramona Lisa Alexander as Dot, Jackie Davis as Jackie, Tasia A. Jones as Gladys, and Omar Robinson as Bobby.

"Audiences often say, ‘I love new plays, but I’ve never heard of this next one that you’re doing.’ The Lyric Stage is proud to expose Boston audiences to playwrights like David Henry Hwang (Chinglish), Lynn Nottage (By the Way, Meet Vera Stark, Intimate Apparel), and Quiara Alegría Hudes (Water by the Spoonful). Katori Hall certainly belongs in that esteemed company," says producing artistic director Spiro Veloudos. "I’m excited to present her play, which personally introduces me to a time and place I don’t know at all (Memphis in the 1940s), and takes me there with skilled storytelling that I find humane and universal."

The creative team includes Mac Young (scenic design), Elisabetta Polito (costume design), Ian W. King (lighting design), and Kelsey Jarboe (sound design).

Performances will run through November 21.
