Crossing starts its run at the Citi Performing Arts Center Shubert Theatre this evening. Based on Walt Whitman’s diary, the story follows Whitman’s experiences as a wartime nurse during the Civil War. In a time when the medical field was far from fully developed, Whitman witnesses the struggles and stories of individual, wounded soldiers. The veterans share their memories, and one, in particular, forges a bond with Whitman, which forces the author to re-examine his role as a writer and poet.

Directed by Diane Paulus with music and libretto by Matthew Aucoin, the opera features Rod Gilfry and Edward Parks as Walt Whitman, Alexander Lews as John Wormley, Davone Tines as Freddie Stower, and Jennifer Zetlan as the Messenger.

The creative team includes Tom Pye (set design), David Zinn (costume design), Jennifer Tipton (lighting design), and Finn Ross (projections).

Performances will run through June 6.
