American Repertory Theater Adds Accessible Programming Performances to Current Season

The American Repertory Theater has announced that it has added accessible programs for its winter offerings including open-captioned, sensory-friendly, and audio-described performances.

A.R.T.'s upcoming production of Dave Malloy's Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, an electro pop opera based on a 70-page slice of Tolstoy’s War and Peace, will feature open captioned performances on December 17 at 7:30pm and December 20 at 2pm. Open captioning at the A.R.T. is made possible with support from Theater Development Fund.

A.R.T. will also offer audio-described performances of Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 on December 30 at 7:30pm and January 3 at 2pm. One hour before each audio-described performance, there will be a touch tour that includes a tactile tour of costumes and production materials. The tour will be held in the West Lobby.

On December 28, A.R.T. will present a sensory-friendly performance of The Pirate Princess, a new musical adaptation of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night for children and their families. Environmental adjustments to the show for the performance include keeping the house lights dimmed, rather than off, during the performance; reducing the volume of the performance; a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere allowing patrons to enter and exit the theater freely during the performance; trained volunteers on hand to assist with patrons needs; and more.
