Tony Award-nominated director Diane Paulus (Pippin) has signed on to direct the world premiere of the new Matt Gould-Griffin Matthews musical, Witness Uganda, at American Repertory Theater in early 2014.
Witness Uganda, which won the ASCAP's Dean Kay and Harold Adamson Awards and the 2012 Richard Rodgers Award for Musical Theatre, is the story of Griffin, a black American volunteer who leaves judgmental New York City to help build a village school in Uganda. But when he falls into a complicated relationship with a group of destitute teenagers, he becomes obsessed with a mission that will change all of their lives forever. The tale is based on a true story.
Located at Harvard University, American Repertory Theater is a leading American theater, producing groundbreaking work in Cambridge and beyond. In 2012, the company won the Best Musical Revival Tony Award for its production of The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess. Since its founding in 1980, A.R.T. has presented a diverse repertoire that includes premieres of American plays, reinterpretations of classical texts, and new music theater productions.
