Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard will be the next production to join Boston's Actors' Shakespeare Project's 10th-anniversary season, running from February 12-March 9 at The Dane Estate at Pine Manor College. Obie Award winner Melia Bensussen will direct.
The Cherry Orchard, Chekhov's final and most famous work, follows an aristocratic Russian woman and her family as they return to their estate just before it is auctioned to pay the mortgage.
"The ASP production will retain all the power of the Russian classic, but will render the play it in its clearest and lightest vein," says Bensussen. "Along with the ambiance of the Dane Estate at Pine Manor and the ASP company, a new translation and design work in tandem to make this Cherry Orchard true to Chekhov's spirit of transparent comedy, and a heartbreaking look at the absurdities that we all share in being alive."
The cast features resident acting company members Marya Lowry, Richard Snee, Stephen Barkimer, Sarah Newhouse, and Marianna Bassham. Additional cast members include Esme Allen, Arthur Waldstein, Lydia Barnett-Mulligan, Jake Berger, Mac Young, Danny Bryck, and Gabe Graetz.
The creative team includes Cristina Todesco (scenic design), Arshan Gailus (sound design/composition), Nancy Leary (costume design), John Malinowski (lighting design), and Ian Thorsell (props).
