Judy Collins, William Finn, Jeff McCarthy, et al. Set for Barrington Stage; 2010 Season Announced

Barrington Stage Company has announced its 2010 season. As previously reported, the company’s Mainstage programming will kick off with the Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (June 17-July 17), starring Jeff McCarthy in the title role. Julianne Boyd will direct, with musical direction by Darren R. Cohen.

The Mainstage season will also include Yasmina Reza’s Art (July 22-August 7), and Alan Ayckbourn’s Absurd Person Singular (August 12-29), directed by Jesse Berger. On BSC’s Stage 2 will be Matthew Lopez’s new play, The Whipping Man (May 27-June 13), directed by Christopher Innvar.

BSC’s Musical Theater Lab will feature the world premiere of Pool Boy by Nikos Tsakalakos (music and lyrics) and Janet Allard (book and lyrics), July 13-August 8, as well as a second MTL musical, to be announced, which will run August 18-29. William Finn will host the fifth edition of Songs by Ridiculously Talented Composers and Lyricists You Probably Don’t Know But Should (September 3 and 4). Barrington Stage Company’s Youth Theatre will present Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Into the Woods (July 14-August 15).

In the Fall, the Mainstage will feature Arthur Miller’s The Crucible (October 6-24). The company’s holiday production will be A Christmas Story, adapted for the stage by Philip Grecian and based on the motion picture screenplay by Jean Shepherd, Leigh Brown and Bob Clark, to perform in December 2010, with exact dates to be announced.

Special events will include the Brazilian celebration of Carnivale (February 6), an annual Summer Gala (June 26), An Evening with Judy Collins (July 26), and a staged reading of a new play by Mark St. Germain (September 4 and 5).
