Deathtrap starts its run at the Fitzpatrick Main Stage this evening. The comedy thriller focuses on Sydney Bruhl, a defeated playwright desperate to write a hit Broadway play. Luckily, his former student, Clifford Anderson, says that he has just written a suspense play with a seamless plot that cannot fail. With unclear motives on both sides of the equation, Sidney lures Clifford into his colonial style, which just happens to be adorned with eclectic antique weaponry. A cast of zany characters join them in the two-act mystery.

Written by Ira Levin and directed by Aaron Mark, the cast features Gregg Edelman (The Mystery of Edwin Drood) as Sidney Bruhl, Tom Pecinka as Clifford Anderson, and Alison Fraser (Gypsy), Debra Jo Rupp (Becoming Dr. Ruth), and Eric Hill as the rest of the cast of characters.

"Deathtrap ran for four years on Broadway after opening in 1978," says director Aaron Mark. "And it's remained ubiquitous in theaters around the world. It's the play theatregoers think we know but shocks us every time. What struck me reading it again recently, though, is how eerily relevant it is prophetic, even in our increasingly 'success' obsessed culture. Ira Levin not only created the mother of all contemporary meta-thrillers when he created Deathtrap, he created a potent cautionary tale about greed. "

Performances will run through July 25.
